Jacques Charlier - Une Rétrospective

14.10.2017 - 14.01.2018

La Panacée
Montpellier (F)

Solo-exhibition Jacques Charlier - Une Rétrospective
curated by Nicolas Bourriaud
at La Panacée, Montpellier (F).

The Belgian artist Jacques Charlier is one of the pioneers of European conceptual art in which he has integrated humor and comics, but also a professional life and rock - he has released several post-punk albums at the end of the 1970s.
Starting from a critical sociology of the art world, Jacques Charlier evolved into a complex and unclassifiable art that evokes the spirit of Francis Picabia while anticipating the American art of the 1990s and especially Mike Kelley.
His work sheds a decisive light on the relations between Europe and the United States in the 1960s, before continuing with total eccentricity in relation to the art of his time.
This is the first retrospective of the artist in France.

Invited by MAC’s for a major exhibition dedicated to him, Jacques Charlier ironically responds with this advertising slogan: paintings for all! "Italian paintings", "fractal paintings" and "indescribable paintings" are the flagship titles of this jukebox-like exhibition. The aim? To show off their colours, and escape into this ‘radical eclecticism’ in the market, which artists who always use the same ‘tubes’ epitomise. A method? Caricature and pastiche which he administers in such a masterly fashion to the art world, like a spanking. His catchphrase? Spare the rod, spoil the child: because paintings enchant Charlier as much as they disillusion him.

DE ZEE - SALUT D'HONNEUR JAN HOET

23.10.2014 - 19.04.2015

MuZee
Romestraat 11, 8400 Oostende (B)

The Sea/De Zee is an exhibition that, just like a wave, cannot be pinned down: it builds up, breaks on the shore and leaves traces that the next wave will wash away.
The Sea is an exhibition in dialogue with Ostend, spread out across several locations – a museum, a fishermen’s church, an old cinema, a hotel with sea view and other inspirational places. The Sea is a salut d’honneur to renowned curator Jan Hoet, who wanted to share his ownlast ode to the sea… with grand gestures and little stories.

'... Seduced by the generous offer of the Triangle Bleu gallery of curating and presenting an exhibition, Jacques Charlier has made a selection of artists, both young and less young, who in their work remain insensitive to external pressures ... Recommended for lovers of the unexpected.' (Stephen Falk)
